We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on neutron diagnostics for transformative fusion energy concepts supported by ARPA-E Alpha (https://arpa-e.energy.gov/?q=arpa-e-programs/alpha). You will apply expertise to the design, fabrication, calibration, deployment and analysis of the neutron diagnostics which include plastic scintillators and nuclear activation detectors and will be used to measure neutron yield and energy anisotropies. The work will be mostly experimental but may also include Monte-Carlo modeling of the diagnostic systems and the experimental geometries. The position is in the National Security Engineering (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.
- Conduct research in and development of neutron diagnostics to support transformative fusion energy concepts.
- Design, procure, assemble and calibrate neutron diagnostics; deploy diagnostics at experimental facilities and analyze data.
- Deploy diagnostics at experimental facilities and analyze data.
- Perform Monte-Carlo simulations to study the diagnostics and the experimental geometries.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Travel as necessary to perform diagnostics calibrations and to deploy the devices at the experimental facilities of the fusion concepts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Recent PhD in Physics, Engineering, or related field.
- Experience with one or more of the following areas: nuclear/neutron diagnostics, plasma experiments, plasma diagnostics, Monte-Carlo simulations.
- Ability to perform as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
- Experience developing independent research projects including publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Effective initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
- Familiarity with nuclear fusion experiments.
- Familiarity with nuclear diagnostics in a high noise environment.
- Experience designing and fabricating new diagnostics capabilities.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.
Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
Note: This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
