For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.We have an opening in the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate for a Health Physicist with a general knowledge of safety and health to provide advanced health physics (HP) support to various LLNL programs at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). This position will also provide additional support in the areas of industrial hygiene (IH) and industrial safety (IS) as well as provide support and guidance to other ES&H team members. Working as part of the Joint Laboratory Office – Nevada (JLON) team, you will interact with all levels of personnel and management from the ES&H Directorate, LLNL programs, NNSS Management & Operating Contractor counterparts and external regulatory agencies. Essential Duties - Provide advanced HP support with some additional support in the areas of IH and IS to LLNL programs in specific areas of assignment. - Write and review technical reports, and review new ES&H standards; prepare related safety documentation including Hazards Control and Assessment Forms, personnel exposure reports, etc. - Evaluate and provide HP/IH/IS recommendations to safety procedures and to facility, equipment, and shielding designs. - Provide HP/IH/IS guidance and selected training to team clients, develop and present safety courses, and/or mentor less experienced personnel. - Provide feedback to management regarding the effectiveness of the HP/IH/IS programs. - Investigate accidents/incidents, make recommendations to prevent reoccurrence, and provide emergency response support to incidents on site. - Review and make necessary recommendations to Facility Safety Plans, Integrated Work Sheets, Radiological Work Permits, Safety analysis Reports, Engineering Designs, ES&H submittals and other technical documents in collaboration with program management, as well as representing LLNL through participation in multi-organizational forums, including the NNSS Radiological Control Council and ALARA Committee. - Conduct facility inspections to identify and evaluate potential hazards and provide guidance for analyzing such hazards in the future. - Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Radiation Physics, or Radiation Protection or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience. - Significant knowledge and experience in health physics and thorough knowledge of related federal regulations and other consensus organizations with general knowledge/understanding of industrial hygiene and industrial safety. - Significant experience and demonstrated ability to lead independent health physics work as well as some work in IH/IS, providing technical direction/leadership to ES&H staff and providing emergency response support and participation in investigations of incidents or accidents. - Advanced analytical, decision-making and problem solving skills to evaluate, interpret, negotiate, recommend and implement actions/solutions for moderately complex problems. - Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to present and communicate technical information to all levels of management both internal and external to the Laboratory, including regulatory agencies and key stakeholders. - Effective organizational skills with attention to detail necessary to handle multiple moderately complex tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities, tight and changing deadlines, and frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service. - Experience working independently and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people and organizations, managing complex projects, and meeting schedules. - Ability to become medically qualified to wear respiratory and protection equipment and to secure and maintain certification in the Human Reliability Program (HRP) which includes: polygraph examination; and physical and psychological assessment; and random drug and alcohol testing. Desired Qualifications - Master's degree in Health Physics, Radiation Physics, or Radiation Protection and certification by the American Board of Health Physics. - Knowledge of DOE Orders and operational experience at DOE facilities. - Experience providing controls when working with plutonium/americium.
Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position. This appointment requires relocation to the NNSS. For internal employees this will be a transfer. This position is to support the NNSS.
