  • Maintain a commitment to the achievement of quality health care services by maintaining patient rights, safety, privacy, confidentiality, and the "customer relations" philosophy.
  • Perform EKGs according to protocol.  Identifies dysrhythmias and informs the nurse immediately.   
  • Perform venipuncture, IV Reseal, flushing, drawing blood and discontinuing IV upon patient discharge or as directed by the RN.
  • Perform phlebotomy (adult and pediatric), including the collection of blood cultures, medical ETOH (with chain of custody), Blood Type and Cross (with proper patient ID banding and documentation), Ultrasound guided IV insertion upon completion of training, and specialized tests, throat and wound cultures, urine specimen collection including urine quick cath insertion, Foley catheter insertion, etc.
  • May assist in triage of patients using the 5 level Emergency Severity Index Triage System.
  • Accurately collect, process and maintain medical record data in collaboration with the health care team.
  • Answer patient call lights and responds to patient requests and needs in a timely manner.  Communicate clinical needs to the appropriate staff. 
  • Assist with sterile procedures, casting and application of orthopedic soft goods. Economical in the use of supplies.
  • Perform unit clerk duties as needed including patient charges, answering the phone, paging or contacting physicians, etc. as needed.
  • Initiate department protocols under the direction of the RN.
  • Maintain a commitment to career growth and development by participation in mandatory in-services, certification, Lakeland Regional Health System committees, and educational programs for improvement of self to maintain competency.
  • Other duties as assigned. (cleaning, stocking, patient transport etc.)
  • Committed to the continuous improvement of the patient experience which includes patient safety, quality of care and excellent service.  Adhere to the organization's published values.

License/Registration/Certification Required:  BCLS.

License/Registration/Certification Preferred:

Minimum Education Required:  High School Diploma or GED.

Advanced Education Required:  (Associate/Bachelor/Master/PhD level and applicable field of study or related field) or equivalent combination of training and/or experience:  Must complete EMT course with passing grade (State board certification not required) or have completed the first semester of RN, or LPN nursing core fundamental courses (excluding pharmacology), or Medical Assistant course completion, or paramedic course completion.

Advanced Education Preferred:  (Associate/Bachelor/Master/PhD)

Minimum Experience Required:  

Additional Experience Preferred:  Recent EMT or Paramedic experience preferred.  ACLS preferred.

Skills (Interpersonal and job complexity):  Strong data entry skills required. Strong verbal and written communications skills, as well as ability to pay close attention to detail required. Must have strong interpersonal skills necessary to represent Lakeland Regional Health System (LRHS).  Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build cooperative working relationships with all staff members, patient families, and visitors required. Must be alert and make sound independent judgments.  Basic computer, data entry, typing, filing and organization skills required.

Abilities:  Must be able to perform a variety of skills according to patient care needs. Must demonstrate the ability to organize, prioritize and manage time. Job requires data entry via existing procedures and formats.  .  Ability to cope with physical and mental stress. 

Ability to work extended hours beyond normal work schedule to include, but not limited to, evenings, weekends, extended shifts and/or extra shifts, various locations, sometimes on short notice.

Environmental Conditions:  Potential exposure to fumes, dust, gases, and odors.   Frequent changes in temperature may occur.  Possibility of exposure to communicable diseases.
