Supervises utilities operational activities including the production of WFI, steam, compressed air and other utilities in order to meet production requirements throughout plant. Provides technical expertise for operators and/or maintenance technicians. Plans, leads, and organizes the training and development of direct reports and evaluates progress and performance.


  • Supervises the daily activities of the utilities operations team including but not limited to establishing mutual goals, assigning tasks and maintaining schedules.

  • Interacts with internal departments and external customers, particularly in problem resolution.

  • Acts as an advisor to subordinate(s) to meet schedules and/or resolve technical problems. Responsible for hiring, coaching and counseling employees, including performance reviews, disciplinary action and terminations.

  • Leads continuous improvement efforts throughout the utilities systems. Reviews and modifies processes and procedures to ensure these systems meet the needs of the plants' continuous operation.

  • Supports the planning and development of new processes and/or capacity increases.

  • Maintains utilities equipment, process and facilities in good order, operating efficiently and meeting all current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs).

  • Ensures all instrumentation in Utilities is properly calibrated and operational. Partners with metrology personnel to schedule calibrations in the department.

  • Leads efforts to maintain excellent housekeeping and orderliness in all utilities areas.

  • Assist with Utilities engineering, validation, and quality systems activities as assigned.

  • Leads the interviewing and hiring process, as well as disciplinary actions including documented councils, written warnings, and terminations.

  • Ensures safe working conditions and implements improvements as needed.

  • Maintains quality of utilities supplied throughout the plant.

  • Assist with various projects as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, high, precarious places, and outside weather conditions. Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

  • Some travel may be required.


  • Responsible for the direct supervision of various levels of utilities maintenance staff.


  • Bachelor's Degree required; in lieu of degree additional years of relevant experience and/or education may be considered.

  • Technical certificate(s) or trade license (Journeyman or above) desired.


  • 2-3 years' experience as an individual contributor senior role; or 1-3 years' experience as a Supervisor.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Strong organization and analytical skills.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Proficient with PCs and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Proficient with clean water monitoring instrumentation and interfacing computer programmed logic.

  • Extensive knowledge in Reverse Osmosis systems and water treatment operations and design.

  • Extensive knowledge in multi-effect and vapor compression distillation units operations and design.
