The EM Administrative Fellowship is designed for physicians who have completed their Emergency Medicine Residency Program. This is a non-ACGME fellowship that provides mentored career development in Emergency Medicine Administration through training in clinical operations, quality improvement, research and scholarly activity, leadership, management, strategic planning, finances, staffing, risk management, knowledge translation, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. The Fellow will be exposed to all aspects of administrative, leadership and operational challenges from a county hospital within a large hospital system. Through committees, projects, training and mentorship related to QI and Patient Safety projects, clinical process improvement, finances and reimbursement, coding and billing, strategy and innovation, clinical research, risk management, observation medicine, and mid-level Provider management, the Fellow will develop a well-rounded portfolio. The Fellow will graduate with skills that will make him or her competitive for a position as assistant medical director / medical director / quality officer upon graduation.

The Fellowship is offered both as a two year program which includes an MBA from the University of Central Florida, as well as a one year program for those that do not with to pursue an MBA. Shift scheduling is done around the graduate school course times and requirements.

In addition to hands-on ED administration experience and interactions with all levels of hospital and corporate leadership, the Fellowship also incorporates a solid didactic component. Fellows will study Envision's risk-free ED modules and help disseminate the info to the department. They will participate in co-leading the administrative rotation for the EM-3 residents. In addition, the Fellow will be sponsored to attend the ACEP ED Directors Academy, and the ACEP Coding and Reimbursement Courses.

The Administrative Fellow is expected to complete a Capstone project resulting in a high-quality publication that addresses an ED administrative issue such as patient satisfaction. or departmental metrics such as sepsis or stroke for example. The Fellow will receive training in data mining of administrative data, to include navigating HCA's dataclear, pubclear and HCA CARRIE platforms.

The Fellows will also receive hands-on guidance on scholarly writing and publication. Some of the journals targeted for publication would include: The American Journal of Medicine Quality, BMJ Quality, BMJ Quality and Safety, Chicago Booth Review, Harvard Business Review, Health Affairs, Health Care: The Journal of Delivery Science and Innovation, Implementation Science, The International Journal of Quality in Health Care, The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety, Journal for Healthcare Quality, The Journal of Clinical Outcomes Management, Journal of Graduate Medical Education, The Journal of Healthcare Risk Management, Patient Safety and Quality Healthcare, Quality Management in Health Care.

Formal curriculum will draw from the following sources: 1) ACEP Quality Improvement & Patient Safety curriculum, 2) Harvard Business Review's Innovating in Health Care, 3) Institute for Healthcare Improvement certification in Quality and Safety, 4) Critical Conversations. Formal Didactics will occur on Wednesday morning (resident conference, optional) and Wednesday afternoon (fellow and SMD/RMD, required).

General fellow expectations: 1) Work 84hrs/month clinically (1088hrs/year); 2) Attend a variety of monthly administrative meetings such as: a) EM department meeting, b) monthly Operations review meeting; c) Envision National group monthly management meeting; d) Hospital sepsis committee national meeting; e) Hospital stroke committee; f) Hospital trauma committee.

About the Facility

The University of Central Florida Emergency Medicine Administrative Fellowship is based at HCA Florida Ocala Health. Ocala Health encompasses HCA Florida Ocala, a 256 bed facility located in the heart of Ocala, and West Marion Community Hospital, a 174 bed hospital located in west Marion County, Summerfield ER, a freestanding Emergency Department located in southern Marion County, and Maricamp ER, a freestanding ER located on Maricamp Road in Ocala. Ocala Regional Medical Center is a Level II Trauma Center and the region's only Comprehensive Stroke Center. The hospitals offer a host of other quality and award-winning services including orthopedic care and joint replacement, robotic surgery, cardiac and vascular services including open heart surgery and interventional procedures, emergency, neurological and rehabilitation services, and bariatric surgery. Ocala Health has the only Commission on Cancer approved cancer center in Marion County. Ocala Health's outpatient facilities include Family Care Specialists, a primary care network of six locations throughout Marion County; Advanced Imaging Centers; a freestanding Wound and Hyperbaric Center; a Senior Wellness Community Center; and three surgical and physician specialty practices.
