The COVID Specimen collection specialist will provide extraordinary care to perform all appropriate registration and specimen collection protocols for COVID symptomatic patients. The COVID Specimen collection specialist demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are always consistent with the standards contained in the Mission, Vision, Values and Leadership Expectations of Covenant HealthCare and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation. Can work independently with limited supervision. Using critical and compassionate thinking skills the COVID Collection Specialist will provide excellent customer service in reducing the patients fear and concern for the collection procedure.
Greet patient and educate patient about the procedure Register the patient in the EPIC system to activate physician order, collect insurance information from patient Collect specimens using nasal pharyngeal technique or throat swabbing Performs all necessary clerical duties including, but not limited to, interacting with COVID Hotline team, facilitating fax orders Maintains proper communication with laboratory personnel, coworkers, coordinators and managers, Courier network. Properly identifies patients according to the Patient Identification procedure at all times. Prepares all specimens prior to transport, for proper labeling requirements and specimen type. Follows laboratory procedures for specimen suitability for testing. Adheres to the laboratory quality control policies as it pertains to moderate complexity testing. Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. Complies with all Covenant and Laboratory policies, procedures, and safety practices. Demonstrates working knowledge of appropriate safety protocol to include universal precautions, CHS safety program, use of personal protective equipment in designated areas, and performs proper hand washing techniques. Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens. Additional duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS RN licensed in the State of Michigan OR LPN licensed in the State of Michigan OR Clinical Medical Assistant OR NCA OR Phlebotomist OR EMT/Paramedic OR Nursing Student with completion of one semester of clinicals Demonstrated extraordinary patient care experience in a clinical setting BLS required KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES Computer knowledge – Experience working in Epic EMR required Registration experience preferred Excellent communication skills Ability to tolerate full PPE while standing/walking for the entire shift Ability to tolerate extreme weather conditions Sound judgment in handling confidential or sensitive issues and material Project a positive and energetic image Demonstrates excellent customer service skills Ability to work independently WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS Frequently Standing, Walking, Sitting, Twisting, Reaching, Handling, Fingering, Feeling, Talking, Hearing, Near Vision, Depth Perception Occasionally Lifting, Carrying, Pushing, Pulling, Climbing, Balancing, Stooping, Kneeling, Crouching, Squatting, & Lifting up to 25 lbs. Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
