The Department of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a skilled Eye Bank Technician I.  This position will function in a multi-specialty, academic setting practice in the Houston, TX Medical Center. The Eye Bank Technician I (EBT) is a part-time position requiring a commitment of 20 hours per week, including weekends and holidays.


This position will screen potential donors for suitability, approach families for donation, and remove ocular tissue for transplant purposes from cadavers.  This individual must be able to multi-task, critically think, pay attention to details, and be a fast learner.  Knowledge of medical terminology and aseptic technique is a bonus, but not required. 

Job Purpose

Responsible for recovering eye tissues needed for transplant and/or research. Evaluates corneal tissue and donor information to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.

Job Duties
  • Recovers eye tissue from tissue donors for transplant or research purposes.
  • Performs and documents donor physical and ocular assessment.
  • Obtains blood specimens for serologic testing.
  • Performs internal processing of tissue on an as needed bases.
  • Requests and obtains medical records of donors.
  • Reviews potential donor medical and social history to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.
  • Delivers eye tissue to surgeons for transplant or research.
  • Answers and screens referral calls for eye donors.
  • May contact families of qualified potential donors and obtains consent to donate eye tissue.
  • Enters referral data into database.
  • Maintains clean and safe laboratory environment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • No experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Eye bank or tissue experience.
  • Clinical/laboratory experience such as a pre-medical student, Surgical Technician, Mortuary Science Student, Paramedic, Forensics / Anthropology Student, etc.
