SCOPE OF POSITION
The Surgical Technologist I in the Operating Room is responsible for providing safe and effective patient care. Functions in an organized manner and demonstrates good professional qualities. The Surgical Technologist I must be flexible in duties and willing to work as an integral part of the surgical team. He/she must be willing to cross train to other specialties within the Operating Room. This position must have an awareness of cost and equipment management. It is not within the Scope of Practice for Surgical Technologists to suture unless the ST is a Certified First Assistant. This position will demonstrate competency in the care of patients of all age groups. (IPMC and KDS do not care for neonates.)
Position requires access to protected patient information (PHI) and team member must adhere to all confidentiality and security policies and procedures.
Job may require entry into secured areas where medications may be stored to fulfill specific duties related to this position.

Job duties of this position may require access to protected patient information (PHI). The team member will be accountable for appropriate use of the record and compliance with all confidentiality and security policy and procedures related to use, access, and disclosure of PHI.
This position reports to the Scheduling Manager/Charge Nurse, then the Clinical Manager. In the absence of the Clinical Manager/Unit Leader, this position reports to the Director of Perioperative Services. This position reports to the Specialty Service Coordinator over the particular service.
The Surgical Tech I is a high school graduate or equivalent experience required. A preferred graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program or completion of mentored training program structured for the purpose of entry into the surgical environment. May be a graduate of licensed practical nursing program and completion of OR Orientation and training. Demonstrates knowledge and practice of basic patient care concepts. Demonstrates the application of the principles of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner that provides for optimal patient care in the OR. Demonstrates basic surgical case preparation skills. Demonstrates the ability to perform the role of first scrub on all basic surgical cases. Demonstrates responsible behavior as a health care professional.
