BAE Systems is seeking a Hardware Design Engineer for our Controls and Avionics Solutions (CAS) business located in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Being a trusted provider of aerospace solutions, the CAS business develops, produces, and services advanced and highly reliability electronic controls for the leading manufacturing of commercial and military aircraft including their flight and propulsion systems. As a member of the BAE Systems' team, you will have the opportunity to work hands-on with complex electronic controls and solve challenging technical problems that both enhance our products performance and that matter to our customers.

In this Hardware Design Engineer role, the qualified candidate will have a mechanical engineering background and project leadership experience to provide design support for the circuit card and final product manufacturing/repair of commercial aerospace controls and electronics. Day-to-day activities will include providing hands-on support to the manufacturing team to aid in resolving design related issues, and acting as the engineering liaison between the remote design engineering organization and the Fort Wayne Operations' team. The goals of this role involve integrating Lean Manufacturing and Design for Six Sigma principles to increase design manufacturability by improving yield and reducing defects and cost.

As a Hardware Design Engineer, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, creating and maintaining engineering change notices; supporting the development and qualification of new manufacturing process; analyzing, measuring and improving existing manufacturing processes using six-sigma tools and techniques; interpreting engineering procedures, drawings and standards to ensure product remains in compliance to both internal and external requirements; collaborating with Quality Engineering on suspect non-conformances utilizing established MRB procedures and practices.

This role is to be performed mostly on-site in the Fort Wayne, Indiana manufacturing facility. Hybrid work model allows some work from home when work scope is applicable.
Some light travel may be required (< 10%). Willing to train applicants with applicable background

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent and minimum 2 years of experience.
  • Ability to perform mechanical tolerance analysis.
  • Ability to interpret and apply technical specifications, standards, and customer requirements.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in problem solving and critical thinking.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and organize multiple activities in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Experience with MS Office products.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Understanding of material science and the physics behind failure mechanisms.
  • Understanding of basic electronic and electromechanical components and their design applications.
  • Familiarity with configuration management including Product Lifecycle Management/Product Data Management (PLM/PDM) systems, product drawings and parts lists, and analysis of product design change history.
  • Proficient at interpreting engineering documentation and industry standards.
  • Adept at problem solving to root cause.
  • Experience using analytical tools and methods (ex. SPC, 6 Sigma tools, etc.) or Greenbelt certified.
  • Experience working in a high energy, fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing procedures and practices of high reliability electronics.
